Analysis of womans magazines

In 1693 the first issue of the first women's magazine in Britain, The Ladies' Mercury, was published.
A quote to support that the author enjoys the pictures in vogue is “ I like to look at the meticulously styled photographs with the intensity of a five year old drawing in a colouring book.”
The tone of this article is for womans magazines as she talks about the potential she believes womans magazines to behold in influence and entertainment, however she still posseses some criticisms.
The main issue the author has with womans’ magazines is that there is too much influence on opinions for paying advertisers, taking up valuable space with advertisements, rather than providing a meaningful message to move and motivate female readers.

This incessant focus on materialism is often funnelled toward female clientele.
-This quote shows that the author believes that there is a ridiculous focus/goal in trying to target woman with advertising to entice them to purchase material products.

magazines … pitch the intangible: the promise of happiness.
-This quote shows that the author believes that magazines attempt to offer unrealistsic and hopeful goals.

Much of society runs on conspicuous consumption.
-This quote shows that the author believes that a large part of society operates from a strange pattern of consumer purchasing.

women are objectified and taught to self-objectify.
-This quote shows that the author believes that magazines teach woman what they should be like and causes them to objectify themselves in the process of woman being objectified.

In women’s magazines beauty is ‘held on a pedestal as the most sought after value’?

I agree with this statement as in many womans magazines the message of striving for beauty is put across. On many front covers of womans magazines, the main image is of a beatiful woman, perhaps with further editing to increase perceived beauty. This is often followed with captions suggesting how to be like her or tips on how to lose weight or make her hair or makeup look as good. The front cover portrays the key message of the magazine as it is the first thing you see, it is what shows what the magazine is about, trying to invite readers in. This therefore is putting beauty on a pedestal as it is showing readers the importance of beauty before they even open the first page of the magazine.
