Surrealists like to put objects that aren't normally associated with each other together to make something both playful and disturbing at the same time.
There are two types of surrealism, one about dreams, and ones call otimitism inspired by freuds idea of free association.
Surrealism continues to have a huge influence on society and culture today.
Surrealism is not just an art movement but a way of thinking, a way of life and a way of transforming existence.

Rhythmic
Tonal
Overtonal
Intellectual

While all montage is editing, not all editing is montage.
According to Eisenstein montage is the combining shots that are depictive, single in meaning, neutral in content, into intellectual contexts and series. Essentially two neutral, unrelated objects to create something undepictable.
Metric montage is cutting according to exact measurement; irregardless of content.
Rhythmic montage is cutting according to the content of the shots; continuity editing.
Tonal montage is cutting according to the emotional "tone" of the piece.
Overtonal montage is cutting according to the various tones and overtones of the shots.
Intellectual montage is cutting according to the shots' relationship to an intellectual concept.

Riptide narrative codes and conventions

In the Riptide music video there are elements of coherence throughout where by montage is used to constantly go back to shots of the woman as well as the sea where the riptides are. This consistency throughout is clear evidence of coherence. There is evidence of postmodernism in the video through the key postmodern aspect of nostalgia where the lyrics state what the singer was once scared of and with the lyrics matching the visuals this puts additional emphasis on the sense of nostalgia, showing this music videos postmodern approach. The riptide is very literal and relates to roland barthes theory that constructed meanings can come to seem self evident. Crime drama conventions present: Male oriented Sacrifices in private lives from dedicated detectives Conflict between different modes of policing Bathes hermeneutic code applies to this episode as an enigma is created when the main protagonist is sent back in time and the audience wonders if it is real or a dream. The episode shows a state of equilibrium at the beginning, then a shift in equilibrium when the protagonist is hit by the car and sent back in time, then begins to return to equilibrium as he realises this. The unique selling point of life on mars is that it is set back in time in the 1970's but that the detective isn't from there.
