The seven principles of structuralism
1. Distinguishment between ideas and reality.
2. The opposition of what is actually there and what could be. Structure of interrelated positions. How we interpret symbols changes.
3. Implies a difference between pattern, discrepancy and border. Differences get attention.
4. Structural relations produce imagination and reality.
     Real but not Actual
     Ideal but not Abstract
5. There are differences in things that follow similar patterns.
6. A code is an institutional structure which conveys singular clear messages.
7. Something is not empty but filled with possibility.

Summary
Structuralist theorists are interested in identifying and analyzing the structures that underline all culteral phenomena.
Structuralists got the notion that everything could be analysed in terms of deep structure from the linguist Ferdinand de Saussure.
When we try to define things, we often start with what they’re not.
Structuralism is all about determining sets of opposites and using those to figure out deep patterns underlying the structure of pretty much anything.

i daniel blake, production and distribution

Media products are produced and distributed to audiences in different ways. I Daniel Blake was produced as an independent film as it had little funding with aid from multiple production companies including; BBC films, Wild Bunch, Why Not Productions and the BFI. Independent films are funded by public funding e.g. the national lottery, by individual investment where people bring their own money and through co-productions where multiple companies come together to produce and distribute the media, splitting the costs and profits. Most British independent films including I Daniel Blake fall under the drama genre as they can be cheaper to make; due to a lack of difficulty in filming and editing with things such as CGI; and to fund due to filming on set(i Daniel Blake was filmed all in newcastle) and they have the biggest audience in Britain. Riptide narrative codes and conventions

In the Riptide music video there are elements of coherence throughout where by montage is used to constantly go back to shots of the woman as well as the sea where the riptides are. This consistency throughout is clear evidence of coherence. There is evidence of postmodernism in the video through the key postmodern aspect of nostalgia where the lyrics state what the singer was once scared of and with the lyrics matching the visuals this puts additional emphasis on the sense of nostalgia, showing this music videos postmodern approach. The riptide is very literal and relates to roland barthes theory that constructed meanings can come to seem self evident. We can see this throughout as when the lyrics are song the images displayed are matching and this therefore makes a very obvious meaning showing they mean exactly what they are saying, with clear cut connotations.
