Riptide, postmodern?

One of the key ideas of postmodernism is nostalgia and this is evidently present in the Riptide music video. It can be seen where the lyrics match the visuals at the point in the music video where it shows a woman in the dentists and multiple times throughout the video where a woman is being dragged out from the light and into the darkness
 
With the visuals and lyrics matching and being spoken in past tense where it says " I was " puts emphasis on the nostalgia being addressed.

Riptide narrative codes and conventions

In the Riptide music video there are elements of coherence throughout where by montage is used to constantly go back to shots of the woman as well as the sea where the riptides are. This consistency throughout is clear evidence of coherence. There is evidence of postmodernism in the video through the key postmodern aspect of nostalgia where the lyrics state what the singer was once scared of and with the lyrics matching the visuals this puts additional emphasis on the sense of nostalgia, showing this music videos postmodern approach. The riptide is very literal and relates to roland barthes theory that constructed meanings can come to seem self evident. Crime drama conventions present: Male oriented Sacrifices in private lives from dedicated detectives Conflict between different modes of policing Bathes hermeneutic code applies to this episode as an enigma is created when the main protagonist is sent back in time and the audience wonders if it is real or a dream. The episode shows a state of equilibrium at the beginning, then a shift in equilibrium when the protagonist is hit by the car and sent back in time, then begins to return to equilibrium as he realises this. The unique selling point of life on mars is that it is set back in time in the 1970's but that the detective isn't from there. The target audience may appreciate a larger mystery and enigma created by the time shift, as well as relatablility to older people of their youthful time period.
