Music videos analysis
EMINEM-WITHOUT ME
In the first shot of this music video it shows the behind the scenes of a recording studio, as someones counts down to the beginning of the recording. This immediately demonstrates that this is a somewhat postmodern music video, in that the boundary is broken showing the background of the music video. This makes it obviously clear that the story portrayed in the music video is fiction and this is therefore breaking the boundary of the 4th wall between media product and the audience.
Following on from this there is a shot showing a young boy and an animation pops up explaining the situation. The format of the animation reflects that of a traditional comic, this is an inter-textual reference to marvel comics which continues throughout the music video in the same way with animations as well as Eminem's costume imitating Robin. This further supports that this is a postmodern music video due to the entire theme of the music video being based on inter-textual references; a key theme of postmodernism. Eminem is challenging the conventions of a typical rap video by producing something different. He reminds the audience that this is a rap video by including shots of him just rapping dressed in a tracksuit and just passionately rapping with shots of him doing something comical either side. He also includes a cameo appearance from the well-known hard rapper Dr Dre who throughout is giving Eminem dissapproving looks of what he is doing and Eminem shhows that he doesnt care. This reinforces the idea that he is intentionally challenging conventions; typical of a postmodern music video.
YOUNG THUG-WYCLEF JEAN
The first shot in the music video is a blank screen showing on screen text that says "Hi this is Ryan Staake. I 'co-directed' this video with Young Thug" and on screen text like this is used throughout. This is an immediate breach of the 4th wall boundary. What makes this music video even more different is the fact that it's not even Young Thug who is addressing the audience, it is the director. Young Thug is spoken about in the 3rd person in his own music video, this is highly unconventional in any genre of music video and therefore immediately demonstrates the postmodernism of this music video. Young Thug requested in his video that instead of having models drive big expensive cars, that they oppose the conventions of a rap video and that the models drive the toy children's cars, and then when there was a real police car used he wanted children to be behind the wheel. This is intentionally creating a juxtaposition that directly relates to postmodernism
