Riptide gender representation

Women are presented as objects in riptide where it shows the book of how to take photos of girls which suggests that they are items that can be logged and also learnt. Although this isn't an image where women are sexualised it is a representation of how women attract the male gaze. Women are also being objectified where the woman of the beach is being filmed. Here men are watching her and using her for the entertainment of others. The lyrics describe her as "the closest thing to Michelle Pfeiffer that you've ever seen" which links to Van Zoonen via this inter-textual reference to a typically beautiful woman creating an idea through discourse and repetition via reference to a woman who is very commonly objectified. In chorus 1 of the lip sync section the woman looks very attractive and presentable matching the social norms of glamour. In chorus 2 the subtitles start to show and the lipstick is smudged showing slight imperfection. In chorus 3 the eye makeup is now al...

Riptide narrative codes and conventions

In the Riptide music video there are elements of coherence throughout where by montage is used to constantly go back to shots of the woman as well as the sea where the riptides are. This consistency throughout is clear evidence of coherence. There is evidence of postmodernism in the video through the key postmodern aspect of nostalgia where the lyrics state what the singer was once scared of and with the lyrics matching the visuals this puts additional emphasis on the sense of nostalgia, showing this music videos postmodern approach. The riptide is very literal and relates to roland barthes theory that constructed meanings can come to seem self evident. We can see this throughout as when the lyrics are song the images displayed are matching and this therefore makes a very obvious meaning showing they mean exactly what they are saying, with clear cut connotations. Roland Barthes states that signs can function at the level of denotation, which involves the literal or common sense meani...

Surrealism and soviet montage

Art and literature represent the unconscious mind. key aspects of surrealism; love, poetry and liberty. Surrealists like to put objects that aren't normally associated with each other together to make something both playful and disturbing at the same time. There are two types of surrealism, one about dreams, and ones call otimitism inspired by freuds idea of free association. Surrealism continues to have a huge influence on society and culture today. Surrealism is not just an art movement but a way of thinking, a way of life and a way of transforming existence. Methods of montage: Metric Rhythmic Tonal Overtonal Intellectual While all montage is editing, not all editing is montage. According to Eisenstein montage is the combining shots that are depictive, single in meaning, neutral in content, into intellectual contexts and series. Essentially two neutral, unrelated objects to create something undepictable. Metric montage is cutting according to exact measurement; i...

Riptide, postmodern?

Image
One of the key ideas of postmodernism is nostalgia and this is evidently present in the Riptide music video. It can be seen where the lyrics match the visuals at the point in the music video where it shows a woman in the dentists and multiple times throughout the video where a woman is being dragged out from the light and into the darkness   With the visuals and lyrics matching and being spoken in past tense where it says " I was " puts emphasis on the nostalgia being addressed.
