One of the key ideas of postmodernism is nostalgia and this is evidently present in the Riptide music video. It can be seen where the lyrics match the visuals at the point in the music video where it shows a woman in the dentists and multiple times throughout the video where a woman is being dragged out from the light and into the darkness   With the visuals and lyrics matching and being spoken in past tense where it says " I was " puts emphasis on the nostalgia being addressed.

Steve Neale says that genre is derived from repetition and difference, genre conventions are manipulated. I think that Beyonce uses black rights for capitalist purposes as in the formation music video she is showing representations of black oppression in reference to police brutality and the slave trade. However the song lyrics do not apply to this at all so can still be listened to as fun pop music. Furthermore, even in the music video it is not serious, it is still a performance where beyonce is trying to entertain people, which can be seen numerous times when beyonce and many other women are dancing.

In my media production I will use a variance of media language. Editing techniques I will use are shot revers shot, in order to show a conversation along with the changes from high to low angle shots to create connotations of confrontation and social hierarchy. I will use an abundance of close-ups throughout in order to show the emotion of the characters which is standard within the drama genre. I will use mise en scene in my media production through the costumes that the characters wear. Both the mother and son well be dressed in cheap tracksuits for example slazenger. This is in order to represent their social status and to show that they have a struggle for money, demonstrated by the cheapness of the clothing and the common associations created by the use of a cheap tracksuit. This stereotypically being that of a CHAV, this is accurate in the sense that the characters are council housed, thus being further evidence of the characters poverty.
