The business of film- bbc radio 4

PRGRM1 Hollywood film producers find a formula for film production that works and follow it. People fear investment in new and independent productions so funding can be very difficult. In the UK the biggest funders are the BFI who wish to grow film talents in the UK. Independent films in majority tend to fail, or if they succeed it is then unlikely the creators will produce again. Hollywood wants to invest in the UK due to tax rebates so films are subsidised. There are over 700 films a year made in the UK. Getting films financed is harder than ever. It is a challenge even to find a way to distribute a film. Even with the best story without the right people, e.g. actors, directors, producers, a film can fail. Women only contribute to 22% of jobs in the film industry. Cinemas will show whatever sells. Audiences are too generalised. PRGRM2 Development hell is when you produce a film on a topic that was hot one week but the next week the films no longer hot and the film...

Applying Fergusons theory to text

Marjorie Ferguson- Women's magazines constantly reiterate the need to be more beautiful, providing readers with what they should aspire to look like, before providing them with the tools to achieve a desired look. This theory can be applied to the sunsational sultanas advert as in the add it shows an image of a woman carrying the product on a platter. The women has a slim figure and is dressed in a tight bathing suit to emphasise this. This connotes that the product is for women who wish to look that way but enjoy a sweet treat. Furthermore, the women is carrying the product on a platter suggesting that she is carrying out a woman's stereotypical role of serving. |Tokenistic- providing a superficial representation of those groups in society that are often under-represented in order to convey an impression of equality and inclusivity. This means that the ethnic minorities are included with the mainstream. Whitewashing- where a non-white person is made to appear to have whit...

applying audience theory to tide and water aid

Cultivation theory In the tide advert the people who produced the advert are trying to convince women that the product is an essential for them, as well as persuading them to embrace their domestic role as a wife and mother carrying out the household tasks, in an attempt to restore patriarchal equilibrium that existed at the time through the use of the cultivation theory. In the water aid advert it is trying to make the message clear to the viewers that what is included within the advert, are not false images but are real issues that are occuring in the world, by showing peoples struggles, the audience is made aware of the extent of the suffering of others and that they are able to make a difference.

Life on mars analysis

Crime drama conventions present: Male oriented Sacrifices in private lives from dedicated detectives Conflict between different modes of policing Bathes hermeneutic code applies to this episode as an enigma is created when the main protagonist is sent back in time and the audience wonders if it is real or a dream. The episode shows a state of equilibrium at the beginning, then a shift in equilibrium when the protagonist is hit by the car and sent back in time, then begins to return to equilibrium as he realises this. The unique selling point of life on mars is that it is set back in time in the 1970's but that the detective isn't from there. The target audience may appreciate a larger mystery and enigma created by the time shift, as well as relatablility to older people of their youthful time period. The episode shows steve reales theory as the repetition is the episode following the regular police programme catch the killer style, however the differenc...

Ocala's Angels

The images all contain the Kurdish women bearing arms, dressed in uniform and holding a stern and sombre facial expression. This represents the young Kurdish women as strong, ruthless soldiers. In the photos of the Kurdish women there are no male soldiers, showing that the women are independent and can be as effective an army as an all-male one. The name of these women is "Ocalan's Angels" and Angels are considered to be amazing, hope filling creatures carrying out of God sent mission. This then connotes that these women are an unstoppable force carrying out an important task. The cover lines for the images tell the story of the operations that the Ocalan’s conduct, for example one operation they run is patrol checks to ensure ISIS members do not pass through. The cover lines show how the women complete their tasks effectively and to a high standard, presenting them as a highly efficient force. Quotes underneath photos of the women soldiers, accompanied by their name, a...
